A typical band & choir trip would involve 90-120 students. At this time, we have only 29 students signed up for the Boston trip. This total includes both band and choir students. We want to provide experiences for the majority of our students, not a select few. It is clear that this trip will not meet that standard and thus is cancelled. This is the very first time we have ever cancelled a trip due to lack of participation. We have done our best to allow extra time for signups, but we are at the decision time to move forward or consider alternative experiences.
Both Mr. Yerkes and I want to thank everyone who did choose to support this trip. We also understand that we are in a very disrupted world. We understand that all reasons to participate or not participate are significant and valid. At the very least, we thank you for your consideration.
The West Deptford Band & Choir has a long-standing tradition of providing trips. We have been working to reinstitute our annual travel as a way to reward our students and reestablish meaningful activities that we believe are unique and life changing. From London, England to Los Angeles, California to Chicago, Illinois to Nashville, Tennessee to Niagara Falls, Canada; we have taken our students far from their hometown and shown them that there is a big, beautiful world out there. We will continue to look for valuable opportunities in the future to better serve and reward our amazing student performers.
We do not look at this as a failure. We are proud that we tried. We strongly believe in the value of these experiences and would do it all again under these same circumstances. The current senior class are the only group of students who have had the opportunity to travel with us (Nashville 2019.) They would be the first to tell you how amazing the trip was. We look forward to returning to providing our students four full years’ worth of travel experiences.
REFUNDS
All direct payments (checks, money orders and cash) will be refunded 100% via school check. Online payments will also be refunded via check to the original card holders, minus the processing fee. Please allow us the next 30 days to reconcile all accounts and have checks prepared.
SENIOR TRIP
Dr. Gismondi confirmed that it is still possible for band and choir trip seniors to alternatively attend the senior trip. There are only 5 senior trip seats available. They are available on a first come, first served basis. If interested, please see Mrs. Brewer in the main office ASAP; this Wednesday at the latest.
Any seniors who had planned to attend the Boston trip instead of the Senior Trip can only transfer out-of-pocket funds to the Senior Trip. Please note, all funds raised through the band and choir fundraisers cannot be applied to the senior trip.
ALTERNATIVES
Mr. Yerkes and I will be looking for another activity to fill the void left by the cancellation of this trip. We believe our students deserve some reward for their continued participation and dedication to the WDHS music department. Look for updates throughout the spring for possible alternatives.
